Asphalt Shingle Roofing System - Designed for Alabama Homes & Businesses

Shingle Roofs are an Affordable & Durable Option for Alabama Homeowners & Building Owners

The Alabama Roof System

A strong and reliable roof system using high-quality materials is essential for protecting your home from the elements and ensuring its longevity. Our comprehensive residential roofing services encompass not only the visible roof covering but also the underlying components that work together to create a robust and watertight system.

The Roof Components

Roof Sheathing:

Roof sheathing provides the structural support and base for the rest of your roofing system. It not only serves as a foundation for roofing materials but also contributes to the overall strength and stability of your roof. Roof sheathing can be constructed using different materials, each with its own set of characteristics. The most common materials used for roof sheathing are:

  • Plywood: Plywood is a popular choice due to its durability and resistance to moisture. It consists of multiple layers of wood veneer bonded together with adhesive, creating a strong and stable surface for roofing materials.
  • OSB(Oriented Strand Board): OSB is an engineered wood product made by compressing and gluing wood strands together. It's a cost-effective option and is commonly used for roof sheathing in many construction projects.
  • Dimensional Lumber: In some cases, dimensional lumber may be used for roof sheathing. While less common than plywood or OSB, it can provide a classic and sturdy option.

Nail Patterns & Regulations: Different municipalities may have specific regulations regarding the nail patterns used for securing roof sheathing. It's essential to adhere to these guidelines to ensure your roof meets local building codes. Proper nail patterns are crucial for maintaining the structural integrity of the roof and preventing issues such as roof deck uplift during severe weather conditions.

Plywood Clips: Plywood clips are important to keep the joints of the sheathing relatively level. Unfortunately, not all roofs are constructed with these clips leading to a poorly constructed substrate. This can lead to a "wavy" appearance. To retrofit these clips, the plywood must be removed and reinstalled.

Roof Underlayment:

Before the shingles and flashing is installed, deck protection plays a vital role in safeguarding your home from the elements. In recent years, Continental has moved away from using traditional felt paper and started using synthetic underlayments. Some of the benefits of using these products are:

  • Advanced Technology: Synthetic materials are engineered for superior performance, offering excellent resistance to moisture and UV rays.
  • Lightweight: They are lightweight, making them easier to handle during installation.
  • Durability: Synthetic options are highly durable and provide long-lasting protection against harsh weather conditions.
  • Breathability: Some synthetics are designed to be breathable, allowing for proper ventilation in the roofing system.

Drip Edge:

Drip edge plays a pivotal role in protecting your home from water damage and enhancing the longevity of your roofing system. This metal strip, installed along the edges of your roof, is your first line of defense against the elements. Drip edge serves multiple functions, including directing rainwater away from your fascia and preventing moisture from infiltrating the underlying structure of your roof.

Drip edge comes in various sizes to accommodate different roofing designs and styles. This flexibility ensures a tailored fit for your specific roofing needs.

  • Materials: Drip edge is commonly available in materials like galvanized steel, aluminum, and even copper. The choice of material can influence the durability and aesthetic appeal of your roofing system.
  • Colors: Drip edge doesn't just serve a functional purpose; it can also contribute to the overall aesthetics of your roof. Many homeowners appreciate the option to select drip edge in colors that complement their roofing material or blend seamlessly with the overall exterior design of their home.

Leak Barrier:

Leak barriers, commonly referred to as Ice & Water Shield or Peel-and-Stick are an important component of a roof system. This self-sealing membrane adds a second layer of protection at the most vulnerable areas of your roof system. The roof sections where this material is used will vary depending on your geographic location.

  • Southern Regions: In southern regions, where snow and ice are less prevalent this leak barrier is primarily used in the valleys and around roof penetrations such as chimneys, skylights, and vents.
  • Northern Regions: In regions where snowfall is prevalent, the installation of leak barrier or ice & water shield is particularly critical. It is typically recommended at both the eaves and rakes in addition to the valleys and around penetrations. Snow damming occurs when snow on your roof's upper, warmer areas melts and then refreezes as it reaches the colder eaves. This process can lead to ice dams forming along the roof's edge, potentially causing water infiltration and damage to your home's interior.

Starter Shingles:

One often-overlooked but crucial element of the roof assembly is the starter shingle. While you can't see the starter shingles once installed, their importance cannot be overstated.

Their primary functions include:

  • Protection: Starter shingles provide an added layer of protection along the roof's eaves and rakes, the areas most vulnerable to wind-driven rain, ice, and snow. They act as a barrier, preventing water from infiltrating the roof deck and underlayment.
  • Sealing: Starter shingles create a secure seal along the edges of your roof, ensuring that your primary shingle courses adhere firmly and resist uplift during high winds. This sealing effect enhances the overall wind resistance of your roofing system.
  • Preventing Shingle Blow-Off: By preventing the first course of shingles from lifting or blowing off, starter shingles contribute to the overall durability and lifespan of your roof. They help protect your investment in roofing materials.

Flashings:

Metal flashing is perhaps the most important component of any roof system to prevent leaks. There are different types of flashing that are used in various applications.

  • Step Flashing: Step flashing is designed for roof-to-wall transitions, such as where a sloped roof meets a vertical wall. These L-shaped pieces of metal are installed in a step-like fashion, overlapping shingles or other roofing materials, creating a secure barrier against water infiltration.
  • Counter Flashing: Counter flashing is typically used in conjunction with step flashing on a brick or stucco transition. By cutting into the brick or stucco, this counter flashing protects and seals the top edge of the step flashing.
  • Apron Flashing: Apron flashing is typically used at the lower side of a roof-to wall transition. This flashing can extend vertically behind siding or counter flashing.

Asphalt Shingles:

Asphalt shingles have been a trusted roofing solution for decades, and their enduring popularity is a testament to their performance and affordability. Asphalt shingles are the cornerstone of the roofing industry, and for good reason:

  • Proven Durability: Asphalt shingles are engineered to withstand the most challenging weather conditions, from scorching summers to frigid winters and everything in between. They offer reliable, long-lasting protection.
  • Versatile Styles: From traditional three-tab shingles to architectural and designer options, asphalt shingles come in a wide array of styles and colors. You can personalize your roof to match your home's aesthetic vision.
  • Affordability: Asphalt shingles are one of the most cost-effective roofing materials available. They provide exceptional value without compromising on quality or performance.
  • Low Maintenance: These shingles require minimal maintenance, making them a hassle-free choice for homeowners seeking a roofing solution that stands the test of time.

Attic Ventilation:

Proper attic ventilation is essential for maintaining your roof's health and ensuring your home's comfort.

  • Temperature Regulation: Attic ventilation helps regulate the temperature in your attic space, preventing it from becoming excessively hot or cold. This regulation contributes to more consistent indoor temperatures and can reduce strain on your HVAC system.
  • Moisture Control: Moisture can accumulate in your attic due to factors like humidity and condensation. Attic ventilation helps mitigate moisture buildup, preventing issues such as mold, rot, and water damage.
  • Energy Efficiency: Effective attic ventilation can improve energy efficiency by reducing the load on your air conditioning and heating systems. This translates to lower energy bills and a more environmentally-friendly home.

At Continental Roofing, we offer a variety of attic ventilation solutions to suit your specific needs:

  • RidgeVent: Installed along the ridge of your roof, ridge vents provide continuous ventilation across the entire roofline. They blend seamlessly with your roof's design and offer efficient, passive airflow.
  • Power Fans (Electric & Solar): Electric and solar-powered attic fans actively expel hot air from your attic, promoting airflow and cooling. They are particularly effective in areas with limited natural ventilation.
  • Wind Turbines: Wind turbines utilize wind energy to create natural ventilation in your attic. They can be an energy-efficient choice for promoting airflow.
  • Passive Mushroom Vents: Mushroom vents are passive vents that provide a natural way for air to enter and exit your attic. They come in various styles and can be an attractive addition to your roof.

One thing to keep in mind is roof ventilation options are most effective when they are paired with sufficient intake vents. The effectiveness of these exhaust ventilation systems relies on a balanced airflow, with intake vents working in conjunction with the exhaust vents to create a continuous flow of air through the attic space.

  • Durable Protection: Quality ridge cap shingles provide protection at the high stress areas of your roof.
  • Improved Aesthetics: These shingles are engineered to add depth and dimension to your roofline. They create a visually appealing, finished look that boosts your home's aesthetics.
  • Seal Roof Joints: Hip & ridge shingles create a secure seal along the roof's ridges and hips, preventing water, debris, and pests from entering your attic space.
